It’s important to know that not all wireless routers are alike. You should research your options before purchasing a wireless router. Here are some tips for choosing the best model for your needs.

Wireless speed rating – Wireless routers are often grouped by protocol. Older Wi-Fi models such as 802.11a and 802.11b support up to 11 Mbps, the most common routers today are 802.11g which support up to 54 Mbps and the latest 802.11n routers claim up to 300 Mbps. The most popular protocol is 802.11g which is the most compatible with other hardware on the market today.

Wireless Encryption – Wireless routers often support more than one type of encryption method. The most common method is WEP, but more advanced methods are available such as WPA or WPA2

Compatibility – If you have existing wireless equipment be sure to check that it will be compatible with you new router. For instance if you have an older wireless adapter that only supports 802.11b, then do not purchase a new router that only supports 802.11g as your old adapter will need to be upgraded too. Also consider available encryption methods to make sure that all your devices are compatible.

Ease of Use and Administration – What good is a new router if it’s too confusing or difficult to configure. Be sure to select one that with a user-friendly interface suitable to your skill level.

If you already have an internet provider or are thinking of signing up for one you might want to call them and see if they will supply a wireless router with their service for free.
